With our upcoming exhibition, Behind the Seams: Clothing and Textiles on Nantucket, opening in May, we continue to reshare clips from our Symposium: Nantucket Needlework that was held at the Friends Meeting House in September 2019.
Susan Boardman is a needlework artist who has taken Nantucket for her muse. She talks about the notable historic and contemporary Nantucket women who inspired her to create her exquisite embroidered narratives and also describes her unique process. The collection of Susan’s narratives and the stories that inspired them are beautifully documented in Sometimes Think of Me: Notable Nantucket Women through Centuries by Betsy Tyler, now in its second printing, available in the online shop at NHA.org.

We are pleased to highlight a recent donation to the collection, this painting of a Nantucket Beach Scene by William Trost Richards.
William Trost Richards was born in Philadelphia and began to draw at a young age. At thirteen, he was forced to leave school to support his family and found a job designing ornamental metal fixtures. He continued to study art, eventually taking classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and exhibiting his first work there in 1852. Richards began painting New England shorelines in the 1860s. In 1865, he spent the summer on Nantucket and painted this panoramic view. It is not known how many paintings he painted on Nantucket during the few months he was here, only six or eight paintings are known to have been painted on Nantucket.
